Malek graduated in 2006 from Department of Textile Engineering, Damascus University. After that he worked as teacher assistant at the same department until he was awarded a scholarship to do a PhD in Spinning Technology. Malek studied MPhil in the School of Textiles and Design and he investigated fancy yarns and their structure, properties and quality. He also studied the modelling of their manufacturing process on hollow spindle spinning machines.

Currently Malek is doing a PhD in doubled bouclé yarn: its manufacturing process, quality, and modelling its structure. His research attempts to study the technology and manufacturing process of multi-thread bouclé fancy yarns made on hollow spindle fancy twisters. The research focuses on structural properties and geometry of bouclé yarn; mapping the interaction patterns of the factors which affect the manufacturing process; modelling the effect of factors; and increasing the functionality of the product.
